The Lover

Presented by The English Theatre of Bruges

‘Is your lover coming today?’

When the lines between domestic lives and fantasy lives become blurred, an erotic battle for dominance emerges.

This one-act play by Pinter is a deliciously dark comedy that twists and turns like lovers in bed.  It follows the sexual deviance of a bourgeois couple as they struggle to maintain a separation between their rather mundane reality and their role-playing sexual fantasies.

Sarah is a domestic goddess who enjoys a daytime lover.  Richard is a dull accountant who enjoys visiting a whore.  Sarah is that whore.  And Richard is Sarah’s daytime lover.  And as simple as that isn’t, it isn’t quite that simple.

Set somewhere in the past, this production of The Lover portrays a timeless couple who you will warm to, be repelled by, be shocked by, and certainly be entertained by.

Performed by Carine Slabbinck and Nicholas O’Connor.

Directed by Clare Allen
